Exhausted from fighting his enemies and with a long journey ahead,  a Kazakh warrior-batyr on his way to his village decided to take a rest.  Sitting down in the shade of a bluff, he cut out a piece of wood, stretched upon it horse hair and tried to extract some sounds.  But the instrument was silent.  Placing it at his side, the batyr fell asleep.  He was woken with sounds coming from the instrument.  Taking it into his hands the batyr was surprised to notice a small wooden chip near the head of the neck that somebody had put under the strings.  He decided that it was a joke of the Evil One.  Since then Kazakh people call this upper chip "shaitan* tiek".
